Islamic Fundamentalism and the role of women

Friday May 21, 2004 the Global Coalition Against Fundamentalism and Women's Freedom Forum held a program on Islamic fundamentalism, Women and their role in the struggle against this phenomenon in George Mason University in Fairfax Virginia . The program began with an introduction by the president of the Global Coalition Against Fundamentalism depicting the importance of a global coalition against fundamentalism as the new global threat while explaining the effect of fundamentalism on today's world and the importance of the role of women in confronting fundamentalism. The program was followed by two documentaries by an Iranian film maker depicting the situation of women in Iran as the victims of the fundamentalist regime.

The documentaries demonstrating the misogyny women are faced with in Iran and the consequences it is having on them. Through one of the documentaries viewers witnessed the situation of women and the reason some are forced to enter prostitution as a last resort to survive.

Fallowing the documentaries, a WFF representative spoke about Islamic fundamentalism, its effect on Iran's society in general and women in particular, and the role Iranian women have had in the struggle for peace and democracy in the nation both in the past and specifically today.
